Dr. Nicholas Viens is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon for the EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region Foot and Ankle Team. Whether he’s treating a competitive athlete following an acute injury or an older patient with long-standing arthritis, Dr. Viens loves helping patients decide upon treatment plans that fit their individual needs. He strives to find solutions to improve their quality of life, using both non-surgical and surgical options. Dr. Viens performs surgery with open and arthroscopic techniques and is proud to offer total ankle replacement as a potential treatment option to his patients.

Education and Expertise

Dr. Viens graduated from Duke University and the Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic surgery of the foot and ankle at The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado.

Dr. Viens is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). He was an AOFAS resident scholar, an American Orthopedic Association (AOA) resident leadership forum nominee; and a John A. Feagin, Jr., M.D., Leadership Program medical scholar.

Dr. Viens has co-authored publications in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, Foot and Ankle International, Journal of Arthroplasty, and the Journal of Surgical Orthopedic Advances.

Dr. Viens currently serves as an Associate Continuing Medical Education (CME) Editor for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Inc. (JBJS). He reviews and revises CME questions based on content published in JBJS to help maintain and improve the high-quality of JBJS’s CME activities.

Dr. Viens enjoys working with patients experiencing general orthopedic problems and has particular clinical interests in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, focusing on the foot and ankle. He routinely addresses injuries and conditions such as:

Whenever possible, Dr. Viens addresses foot and ankle conditions and injuries utilizing conservative treatment methods. If a diagnosis is severe or does not respond well to non-operative treatment, Dr. Viens performs surgery with open and minimally-invasive, arthroscopic techniques. Community Connections

Prior to joining EmergeOrtho, Dr. Viens practiced orthopedic surgery in Lexington, Kentucky. He returned to the Triangle Area with his wife, who graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and their children.
