What is Achilles tendinitis?
The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your body, and it connects your heel bone to your calf muscles. It enables you to run, jump and walk. While it can withstand a lot of stress, it is also prone to injuries and inflammation.
Achilles tendinitis occurs when the tendon is inflamed as the result of repetitive stress– it makes exercising, walking and daily activities extremely difficult and even painful. There are several causes, including:
- Pushing your body too hard during intense exercise
- Tight calf muscles
- Improper running technique
- Abrupt movements
- Overuse
- Neglecting warm-up and stretching before exercise
- Problems with foot structure, including flat feet
- Wearing the wrong shoes
- A bone spur rubbing against the tendon.
Usually pain medication, ice and compression, and rest can speed the healing of an Achilles tendon injury. However, if the tendon ruptures, surgery will be necessary to repair it. Ruptures frequently occur from sudden movements that stress the calf muscles, such as jumping or quick stops; overstretching; and vigorous exercise after a long period of inactivity
Symptoms of Achilles tendinitis
Symptoms of Achilles tendinitis include:
- A mild, consistent ache, particularly after running or athletic activities
- Morning stiffness
- Tenderness
- Pain
If you have heard a popping sound followed by intense pain, it’s possible that you may have ruptured your Achilles tendon. If you’ve experienced this, you should contact our leading orthopedic experts as soon as possible so we can accurately diagnose your condition in order to provide an effective, comprehensive treatment plan.
Treatment for Achilles Tendinitis
In many cases, surgery is not needed to treat Achilles tendinitis. Effective nonsurgical treatments include:
- Placing ice on the area
- Taking anti-inflammatory medication
- Getting plenty of rest
- Participating in physical therapy exercises
- Using orthotic devices such as specialized shoes or cushioned insoles
If pain persists or if the tendon is torn, you may need surgery. We offer repair of Achilles tendon ruptures and Achilles reconstruction. EmergeOrtho’s innovative treatment, advanced surgical technology and compassionate care provide sophisticated, effective care that will help you emerge stronger.
