Our vein clinic was specifically designed to diagnose and treat a variety of venous disorders and diseases. We offer a variety of advanced, minimally invasive treatments, allowing our patients to recover faster and get back to their daily routine quicker than ever!

Common Venous Disorders and Diseases we Treat

Not all vein problems are visible. Many patients may not realize their veins are not functioning properly until symptoms begin to occur.

Common vein-related disorders and diseases we treat include:

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins develop when the valves in the veins don’t work properly, and blood pools in them due to the effects of gravity. This gives the veins a swollen, purple appearance. Varicose veins can be accompanied by spider veins, which are thin, visibly red veins.

Although this can be a cosmetic concern for many, varicose veins can produce symptoms, including:

  • Pain
  • Aching
  • Cramping
  • Swelling
  • Throbbing
  • Skin discoloration
  • Superficial blood clots (in rare cases)
  • Bleeding (rarely)
  • Ulcers

Spider veins

Spider veins are usually asymptomatic, but can cause itching and burning. Many people find them to be cosmetically displeasing. Very infrequently, bleeding can occur.

Superficial Thrombophlebitis

This is a condition signified by inflammation in the veins near the surface of the skin. Usually occurring without a known inciting event, phlebitis is rarely serious and usually heals by itself. However, there are instances where superficial thrombophlebitis is best evaluated by a medical professional.

Symptoms commonly include:

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Itchiness
  • Redness of the skin
  • Low-grade fever (in cases that involve an infection)

Innovative Venous Disorder Treatment Options

The diagnosis of incompetent veins, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), or any of the above conditions is made with a simple physical examination and ultrasound. Minimally-invasive therapies are available to treat malfunctioning vein disorders, including:

  • Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
This technique is used to treat malfunctioning veins that are often not visible on physical examination, but instead are identified with ultrasound imaging. We use ultrasound guidance to direct a small catheter with a laser-fiber tip into the abnormal vein. Then we laser the vein, resulting in inflammation, fibrosis, and eventual resorption of the vein. This in-office procedure, which is performed under local anesthesia, is over 95% successful.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
RFA is similar to EVLA, except it utilizes radio frequency to treat the vein rather than a laser.
  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy
This procedure is performed to remove unwanted visible varicosities. The veins to be removed are identified and marked, and the surrounding area is then injected with dilute numbing medicine. The veins are then removed through tiny two-millimeter incisions. This is an outpatient procedure, with patients often having the ability to return to a modified daily routine the following day.
  • Sclerotherapy
This non-surgical technique is often used as an adjunct or alternative for treatment of smaller varicose veins and spider veins. The veins to be treated are identified, and then the sclerosant (an irritant) is injected into the veins at several different points. This irritant causes inflammation, and as a result, the unwanted veins are reabsorbed and disappear. Patients can immediately return home after this procedure.
