Dr. John O’Malley is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic surgery. Dr. O’Malley is the sports medicine team physician for UNC Wilmington Seahawk Athletics. He practices in Wilmington at 2716 Ashton Drive, in Porters Neck at 8115 Market Street and in our newest location at 1168 East Cutlar Crossing in the Villages of Brunswick Forest. Dr. O’Malley is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Upstate Medical School in Syracuse, NY. He completed his residency at State University of New York, Stony Brook. He received his fellowship from Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia in Sports Medicine, during which he worked with the Philadelphia Eagles professional football team, the Philadelphia Flyers professional hockey team and the Virginia Slims Tennis Tournament.

In Wilmington, Dr. O’Malley has worked as team physician for the Seattle Mariners AA baseball team (Port City Roosters), the Wilmington Sharks baseball team, the Carolina Stars football team, Topsail High School and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He has also earned a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He has practiced orthopedic surgery since 1993 and joined EmergeOrtho in 1999.

Dr. O’Malley specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder, total joint replacement, and general orthopedic surgery. He is fully certified in Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery for total knee replacement, as well as the ROSA Knee System.

He is an avid tennis player, runner and enjoys spending time with his four children.

Physicians who are Mako and/or ROSA certified are credentialed and able to perform surgery at any of the regional facilities that have these robotic-assisted surgery systems, including but not limited to: Brunswick Surgery Center in Leland, NC; Novant Health (formerly New Hanover Regional Medical Center) in Wilmington, NC; and Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport, NC.
