Dr. Smith received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then attended Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Stony Brook in New York followed by an additional year of training in arthroscopy and sports medicine at the University of Kentucky. There he received training in treating athletes at all levels of competition. He served as the Assistant Team Physician for the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Kentucky State University Thorobreds. In addition, he was the Assistant Team Physician for the 2004 NIFL Arena League National Championship football team, the Lexington Horsemen.
Dr. Smith is board certified in Orthopedics. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the North Carolina Orthopedic Association and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He serves as the Chairman for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Wilson Medical Center and is also the Chairman of the Division of Surgery at Wilson Medical Center. He also serves on multiple committees including the Peer Review Committee, the Medical Executive Committee, and the Bylaws Committee.
