Dr. Robert J. Baranello is a board-certified anesthesiologist and Accredited Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) fellowship-trained interventional pain management doctor at EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region. He is passionate about helping his patients regain function and quality of life through an accurate diagnosis and targeted pain treatment. During his academic career, Dr. Baranello has published several peer-reviewed journal articles and spoken at regional and national meetings about anesthesiology, pain medicine, and neuromodulation. Clinically, he is interested in using interventional techniques as part of a multimodal approach to pain management using precise and specific therapies.

Education and Expertise

Dr. Baranello attended the College of Charleston for his undergraduate education where he studied biology and chemistry. He then went on to pursue a master’s degree at the Medical University of South Carolina where he performed research in the department of neurosciences.

He then received his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. He subsequently underwent training in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was awarded “Resident Teacher of the Year” for his commitment to teaching medical students and junior residents.

To further his training as a pain management doctor, Dr. Baranello pursued additional ACGME-certified fellowship training in interventional pain medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. During his fellowship, he gained specialized training in neuromodulation and spinal cord stimulation. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and the North American Neuromodulation Society.

As a board certified pain management physician, Dr. Baranello manages a range of spine-related acute and chronic pain complaints, including:

  • Interfascial Plane Blocks (Rectus sheath, transversus abdominis, quadratus lumborum, erector spinae, pectoralis, serratus anterior)
  • Intra-articular Joint Injections (shoulder, hip, knee)
  • Genicular Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation
  • Sympathetic Nerve Blocks (Stellate, celiac, lumbar plexus, ganglion impar)
  • Greater and Lesser Occipital Nerve Blocks
