mild®: Minimally Invasive Procedure, Maximum Relief for Lower Back Pain

Back pain is so common, up to 80% of us can expect to experience it at some point in our lives. While issues may occur in any part of the spine, those who are diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) may find lasting relief through an innovative new procedure called mild® (minimally invasive lumbar decompression).

When a patient has LSS, the lower spinal canal has narrowed, causing pressure on the spinal nerves in that area. Symptoms may include pain or numbness when standing or walking, and relief when sitting or bending forward. Sufferers may also feel tingling in the upper legs or buttocks.

A quick, outpatient procedure, mild may be recommended if physical therapy and pain medications do not provide adequate relief. Currently, David W. Zub, MD, is the only physician in EmergeOrtho’s Wilmington region who performs this new procedure.

The Procedure

Using contrast material to assist with visualization, the physician uses an X-ray-guided sculpting tool to cut and remove excess ligament tissue. This restores space in the spinal canal, thereby reducing nerve compression.

mild is a minimally invasive procedure, which requires no implants, stitches or general anesthesia, and patients are prescribed neither steroids nor opioids.

The procedure usually takes an hour or less, and because the mechanics and bone structure of the spine are not disrupted, patients can often resume normal activity the next day. mild is covered by all types of Medicare, and many commercial insurers are reviewing their policies concerning the procedure.
