Dr. Kathryn M. Baerman provides a multi-disciplinary approach for comprehensive cancer care as part of the general surgery team for EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region. Dr. Baerman’s goal is to ensure patient-centered care and optimum outcomes for every patient. In addition to her expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant breast disease, her other areas of specialty include abdominal, endocrine, and hernia surgeries.
Education and Expertise
Dr. Baerman earned her undergraduate, graduate, and medical degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and remained in the Triangle Area for her residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. She fortified her surgical expertise through an Advanced Surgical Breast Oncology Training Program and an Oncology Research Fellowship. While in medical school she was an administrative chief resident and a distinguished medical scholar.

Her specialty training and experience enable Dr. Baerman to address a number of abdominal and endocrine conditions and diseases, which include:
- Diseases of the gallbladder, small bowel, appendix, and large bowel
- Diseases of the adrenal, parathyroid, and thyroid glands
- Inguinal, femoral, ventral/incisional, and other hernias
To address the conditions above as well as benign and malignant breast disease and comprehensive breast care, Dr. Baerman frequently performs the following surgical procedures:
- Abdominal surgeries
- Endocrine surgeries
- Hernia repair surgeries
- Biopsies
- Breast conservation
- Oncoplastic surgery
- Mastectomies
- Sentinel lymph node biopsies
Throughout her career, Dr. Baerman has garnered honors. This includes her 2013 recognition as Patients’ Choice physician, an award that honors her as a doctor who is not only highly regarded in the profession, but is also highly recommended by her patients. She has published numerous journal articles and given presentations at medical symposia.
Community Connections
For fun, Dr. Baerman performs on the (long taught) viola and violin. She takes great interest in chamber music, has played with multiple orchestras, and is a former instructor of music at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke Music Departments.
