Frequently Asked Questions About MRIs

When considering MRI services, you might have some important questions. This section addresses the most common inquiries regarding MRIs, helping you understand what to expect and how to prepare for your scan.

What is an MRI?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging technique that utilizes strong magnets and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of your body, including organs and soft tissues. It is particularly effective in diagnosing conditions related to the brain, muscles, and joints.

Is an MRI Safe?

Yes, MRIs are considered safe since they do not expose you to ionizing radiation, unlike X-rays. However, it’s essential to inform your healthcare provider about any metal implants, as they may affect the MRI process.

Does an MRI Hurt?

No, the MRI procedure is painless. You may need to remain still for the duration of the scan, which could be uncomfortable for some individuals, but it does not cause any pain.

How Long does an MRI Take?

The duration of an MRI scan can vary, typically ranging from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity of the examination. Specifically, an MRI of the shoulder may take around 30 minutes. For more details, refer to our frequently asked questions about MRIs section.

How Long do Head MRIs take?

Head MRIs can also vary in duration, generally taking between 20 to 45 minutes. It’s important to be prepared for the possibility of longer wait times, especially if additional imaging is required. For more detailed answers, check our MRI frequelty asked questions.

Can I Eat Before an MRI?

In general, you can eat and drink normally before an MRI. However, for certain types of abdominal MRIs, fasting for a few hours prior to the procedure may be required.

Is there an MRI Scan Weight Limit?

Most MRI machines have a weight limit, typically ranging from 300 to 450 pounds. It’s important to check with your healthcare provider or the facility performing the MRI to ensure you meet the necessary weight limit for MRI. Understanding the MRI scan weight limit can help you prepare for your visit.

What Should I Wear During my MRI?

When preparing for an MRI, it’s important to wear comfortable clothing that is free from any metal components. Opt for loose-fitting garments made of cotton or other non-metallic materials. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown to ensure there are no metal objects that could interfere with the MRI imaging. Additionally, it’s advisable to remove all jewelry, watches, and other accessories before the procedure.

How Long Will it Take to get My MRI Results?

The time it takes to receive MRI results can vary depending on several factors, including the facility’s workflow and the complexity of the images. Generally you can expect to receive results within a few days to a week. However, in urgent cases, a radiologist may provide preliminary findings to your doctor shortly after the scan. It’s important to follow up with your healthcare provider to discuss the results and any further steps needed based on the findings.
