Nabil Mehta, MD

Dr. Mehta is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of conditions related to the shoulder and elbow. When surgical treatment is required, Dr. Mehta uses both arthroscopic and open reconstructive techniques to treat all shoulder and elbow problems, including arthritis/cartilage loss, sports-related injuries, fractures and instability. Dr. Mehta is highly trained in complex shoulder and elbow procedures, including for failed prior surgery, recurrent shoulder instability, arthritis with deformity, and complex rotator cuff tears.

After graduating with a BSE in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Mehta completed a research fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He received his medical degree from Brown University, where he was elected into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Following medical school, Dr. Mehta completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation. There, he trained with the orthopedists for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox and gained comprehensive orthopedic knowledge in fracture surgery, arthroscopy, shoulder replacement, and revision shoulder and elbow procedures. Dr. Mehta followed his residency training with a fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia, conducting rigorous training with world leaders in complex shoulder and elbow reconstruction.

Dr. Mehta believes in using evidence-based medicine to provide the highest quality care to each patient. He has been an avid researcher throughout his career, publishing over 70 peer-reviewed articles and has presented his research numerous times at national conferences. He holds memberships in the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

Dr. Mehta takes an individualized approach to patient care and uses both non-surgical and surgical treatments to help patients achieve their goals. He takes pride in getting to know each patient and their unique needs in order to determine a treatment plan that enables them to get back to doing what they love. He considers it a privilege to serve the Raleigh-Durham community and help patients reduce pain and disability and improve their quality of life.

Outside of clinical care, Dr. Mehta enjoys running, working on his golf game, and spending time with his family.
