Meet Dr. Michael N. Melson

Dr. Michael Melson is a board-certified physiatrist and sports medicine physician who completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He specializes in musculoskeletal medicine, interventional procedures, and comprehensive rehabilitation for athletes and active individuals. His fellowship training includes extensive experience in orthopedic sports medicine, hand, foot and ankle care, and student health, with sports coverage for collegiate and professional teams such as Citadel Football, Charleston Battery soccer, and the South Carolina Stingrays hockey team.

Dr. Melson earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of North Carolina, where he served as Chief Resident and received the Resident Teaching Award. He is skilled in advanced interventional techniques, including ultrasound- and fluoroscopic-guided injections, nerve hydrodissections, radiofrequency ablation, and electromyography.
An active contributor to research and education, Dr. Melson has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented case reports at national conferences, including AMSSM and AAPMR. His academic interests focus on sports-related injuries, ultrasound-guided procedures, and innovative rehabilitation strategies. He is a member of leading professional organizations such as the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

Outside of clinical practice, Dr. Melson is passionate about community service, volunteering at free medical clinics and providing pre-participation physicals for student athletes. He also enjoys mentoring future physicians and sharing insights through lectures and educational initiatives.
