Michael Madsen, MD

Dr. Michael Madsen is the newest addition to the expert team at EmergeOrtho’s Triangle locations which include: Clayton and Smithfield. As part of the Back, Neck, & Spine Team at EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region, Dr. Madsen performs minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery for the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.

Since entering practice, he has been the winner of multiple Patient’s Choice awards for spinal surgery. In 2024, Dr. Madsen was named one of America’s Best Spine Surgeons, making the list of the Top 150, by Newsweek. When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Madsen enjoys cycling and spending time with his seven children.

Education and Expertise

Dr. Madsen attended medical school at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in Manhattan, New York. Afterwards, he attended the top orthopedic residency in the country at Hospital for Special Surgery affiliated with Cornell University. He has completed two spinal surgery fellowships: the John Moe fellowship in Minnesota and one with world renowned surgeon Jurgen Harms in Germany. In Denver, where he started his career, Dr. Madsen served as a spinal consultant to the Broncos and Rockies sports teams.

As a fellowship trained, board certified orthopedic spinal surgery specialist, Dr. Madsen treats a variety of conditions including:
