Dr. Matthew Braswell is a highly skilled foot and ankle specialist with EmergeOrtho – Coastal Region. With a dedication to excellence and a compassionate approach to orthopedic care, Dr. Braswell is committed to enhancing the lives of his patients through personalized treatment.
Education and Training
Dr. Braswell’s academic journey began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He furthered his expertise with a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Carolinas Medical Center, honing his skills in various aspects of orthopedics. Dr. Braswell’s commitment to excellence led him to pursue specialized training in foot and ankle orthopedics through a fellowship at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery, solidifying his expertise in his chosen field.
Dr. Braswell is a frequently published contributor to specialty medical journals and an established podium presenter at national annual meetings for orthopedic specialists. He has also served on various prestigious committees and programs covering a range of topics, including quality assurance and improvement, performing root cause analyses, and instituting quality improvement measures.
A native of Wilmington, Dr. Braswell has a heart for community service and has participated in numerous outreach initiatives throughout his life. While in medical school, he worked with multiple military and veteran service organizations, including founding two. He has participated in medical service trips to Honduras twice and he spent a month in Tanzania in 2023, teaching residents and operating at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center. Dr. Braswell was nominated for the Dr. Louisa Littleton Underserved Populations award and is an active board member for a nonprofit focused on funding surgeries in developing countries.
The son and brother of football coaches, Dr. Braswell played football at John T. Hoggard High School and was a walk-on at UNC. He has a love of athletics in general, and sports medicine in particular, and relished the opportunity to work alongside team physicians for numerous NFL and NBA franchises during his residency and fellowship.
