Matthew Popa, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and knee and hip replacement doctor. He sees patients at the Clayton and Smithfield offices as part of the knee and hip team.

Dr. Popa is fellowship-trained in adult total joint reconstruction, and his main area of specialty is hip and knee replacement. He also provides patients with a wide range of orthopedic treatments. Dr. Popa uses a multi-faceted approach to treating patients, combining nutrition and lifestyle changes with medical treatment to improve quality of life.

Education and Expertise

Dr. Matthew Popa earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University. He graduated in 2002 with a cum laude degree in chemistry and physics. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Following medical school, Dr. Popa completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners, which is affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He then completed an adult reconstruction and total joint fellowship at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland.

Dr. Matt Popa is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. During his time in medical school, he was named a Dean’s/Amici Scholar and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. During his residency in Grand Rapids, he won a grant from the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation to study post-radiation necrosis following soft tissue sarcoma resection.

As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Popa provides several treatments. His main area of specialty is hip and knee replacement procedures, including total joint replacements and revisions. He also offers a range of additional orthopedic procedures and treatments, including arthroscopy, carpal tunnel release, and fracture surgery.

Dr. Popa works with patients who have a variety of conditions and injuries, including degenerative joint conditions, sports injuries, fractures, and trauma.

Personal Interests

Dr. Matthew Popa is married with five children. He enjoys spending as much of his free time with his family as possible. He plays soccer occasionally and he enjoys posting F3, taking part in peer-led workouts for men that focus on fitness, fellowship, and faith.
