Dr. Joseph Massaglia is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon for the EmergeOrtho-Triangle Region Foot and Ankle Team. Dr. Massaglia specializes in treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions that affect the lower leg. When deciding upon treatment, he focuses on shared decision making with his patients. Dr. Massaglia’s goal is to improve his patient’s quality of life utilizing treatment plans tailored to fit the individual’s needs and lifestyle. If conservative measures fail, Dr. Massaglia can offer surgeries performed in either an open, minimally invasive, or arthroscopic fashion. He performs total ankle replacement for patients with debilitating ankle arthritis.

Education and Expertise

Dr. Massaglia graduated with an honors degree from the University of Delaware. He graduated medical school from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Jefferson Health New Jersey, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic surgery of the foot and ankle at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Dr. Massaglia is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). He was an AOFAS resident scholar during his surgical training.

Dr. Massaglia has authored publications in Foot and Ankle International, Foot & Ankle Specialist, the Journal of Arthroplasty, and the Journal of Wrist Surgery.

Dr. Massaglia has a particular clinical interest in pathology about the foot and ankle. He routinely addresses injuries and conditions such as:

Ankle & foot arthritis
Achilles tendon tears
Peroneal tendon tears
Bunion & lesser toe deformity

Dr. Massaglia is beginning his practice in North Carolina. Him and his wife, Kelley, and two young daughters, Brynnlee and Charlotte, are excited to be close to Wilmington, NC, where his in-laws reside.
