A board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist with a quarter of a century of experience in the region, Dale W. Boyd, Jr., MD focuses on sports medicine for athletes of all ages and competitive levels. He is highly experienced in treating injuries and conditions of the elbow, knee and lower limb, including knee and shoulder reconstructions and joint preservation through cutting-edge cartilage and ligament procedures. He also has extensive experience caring for preadolescence athletes, from both a surgical and nonsurgical perspective.
Dr. Boyd graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine, completed his residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI, and his fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
His inherent knowledge of high-level athletic participation stems from personal experience. He was an NCAA Division I college wrestler, as was his father. Dr. Boyd’s two children were also NCAA Division I athletes: his son wrestled at the University of Missouri and his daughter played golf at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
Dr. Boyd was named the NCATA Sports Medicine Person of the Year in 2001 and was the team physician for the Wilmington Hammerheads professional soccer team from 1998 to 2007.
He has contributed to several peer-reviewed literature publications and has published a chapter on knee surgery in an American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons journal.
Beginning October 1, 2020, Cape Fear Sports Medicine will become part of EmergeOrtho, bringing together two of the region’s most respected names in orthopedic medicine. “We are excited about what this new association means for our patients,” said Dale W.
