Leading the Way with Orthobiologics for Arthritis, Tendonitis & Pain from Sports Injuries

As part of our commitment to providing our patients with the most proven, as well as most promising, treatments, EmergeOrtho specialists stay up to date with new advancements in orthopedic procedures and treatments. In fact, we often lead the way in expertise and train fellow physicians on the latest techniques and devices.

Recently, innovations in medicine have led to some truly remarkable treatment options for musculoskeletal diseases and injuries, most notably in the field of orthobiologics.

Orthobiologics Achieve Remarkable Results in Healing, Strengthening & Pain Relief

Truly a new era in modern medicine, orthobiologics involves using injections of the patient’s own blood, stem cells, or fat tissue to achieve remarkable results in healing, strengthening, pain relief and restoring overall function, without concern for allergic reaction or rejection. Orthobiologic therapies have been effective for many patients with these and other conditions: arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, major joint issues and sports medicine injuries.

EmergeOrtho: Greater Wilmington Region offers three advanced orthobiologic therapies, all of which may be used as stand-alone nonsurgical treatments or for enhancing postsurgical outcomes:

  • Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections
A small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge. As the blood is spun at a high speed, the platelets—which play a key role in healing—become concentrated. This liquid, which contains three to five times the concentration of growth factors as normal human blood, is injected around or near the injured area.
  • Bone marrow concentrate (BMC) stem cell therapy
A suctioned syringe attached to a long needle extracts bone marrow from the patient’s hip.
The collected sample is transferred through a filter, and then placed in a centrifuge. Spinning at a high speed separates the platelets and the stem cells from the bone marrow. This concentrate is then injected into the injured area.
  • Lipogems adipose (fat) transfer
A few tablespoons of fat tissue are harvested from the patient’s abdomen, side or thigh. This adipose tissue is then processed using special equipment that activates the cells. The processed concentrate is then injected into the injured area of the body.

Patients of EmergeOrtho are assured of individualized, compassionate care and the knowledge that these therapies are considered along with the wide range of other options, including more traditional surgical and nonsurgical treatments. In some cases, the physician may utilize x-ray or ultrasound imaging to guide the injections.

Orthobilogic Injections are Outpatient Procedures

All orthobilogic injections are outpatient procedures and fall under our sports medicine specialty. and are offered by the following physicians:
