Muscle scraping, also known as gua sha, is an increasingly popular tool used in sports medicine and injury rehabilitation. Gua sha scraping comes from traditional Chinese medicine, and while it is an ancient technique, it is now used in modern clinical settings.

What Is Muscle Scraping?

Muscle scraping is a soft-tissue therapy that uses a smooth-edged tool to apply controlled pressure across the skin, targeting underlying fascia and muscle. The tools are made of stainless steel or hard plastic.

A primary focus of muscle scraping is an instrument-assisted myofascial release, a manual therapy that targets the fascia, a layer of connective tissue that surrounds muscle. What Are the Benefits of Muscle Scraping?

What To Expect as Part of a Recovery Plan

If you are a candidate for muscle scraping as part of your rehab or recovery plan, it helps to know what to expect. Your therapist or sports medicine specialist will probably use it as one tool in a comprehensive plan that also includes strength training, mobility work, and other therapies. You might not receive scraping at every visit, but it will be used strategically.

Your therapist will start by applying a lubricant to the area of your skin to be treated. They will then scrape the tool across the area in specific and strategic patterns. You can expect to feel pressure and some friction, and maybe a little discomfort, but not significant pain.

The scraping might leave you with some temporary redness or even light bruising, which is normal. Drink plenty of fluids after the therapy and follow your therapist’s recommendations for exercise and movement.
