Athletics are back in full swing and EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region’s highly skilled and knowledgeable athletic training staff are back to keeping our sports enthusiasts strong.

Find out more about exactly what athletic trainers do, and how they can help you reach your sports training goals.

We also take a look at how our ATs help evaluate, prevent, and treat a wide scope of sports-related injuries and conditions (and so much more).

Athletic Training Profession: What ATs Do

The scope of athletic training is broad, while also requiring extensive training and multiple skill sets. Athletic trainers are required to have a baccalaureate degree or master’s degree from an accredited institution. According to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), 70% of ATs have a master’s degree.

Their accumulative education experience and clinical training allows athletic trainers to offer patients:

  • Evaluation and Diagnosis

Athletic trainers evaluate and diagnose a variety of injuries and conditions. And, while these are often sports-related, they do not have to be—athletic trainers are skilled and practiced in evaluating general orthopedic injuries and conditions. They also provide a diverse selection of evaluations which include pre-participation physical exams, musculoskeletal flexibility assessments, body composition assessments, and more.

  • Injury and Illness Prevention

NATA reports that ATs spend 50% of their time providing patients with preventative health care. This can include assisting patients with physical therapy exercises and stretches, taping, bracing, and more strategies for helping to protect athletes (on and off the field, court, track, etc.).

  • Emergency Care

ATs can provide emergency care for a number of issues including, but not limited to: Acute musculoskeletal injuries, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, diabetic emergencies, heat strokes, concussions and more.

  • Treatment and Rehabilitation

ATs address issues that involve the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow, and more, helping to restore function and mobility. They can offer a broad spectrum of treatments which include, but are not limited to manual therapies such as joint mobilization and massage; special exercises to improve endurance and strength; biofeedback; hot and cold packs, and more.

  • Orthopedics

Our athletic trainers also have a background in orthopedics. No matter your training goals, our team of athletic trainers strive to provide personalized, integrative orthopedic treatment and guidance.

In addition to performing precision assessments, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention services, certified athletic trainers must also be proficient in the following areas:

  • General Medical Conditions and Disabilities
  • Therapeutic Modalities
  • Pharmacology
  • Behavioral Health Intervention and Referral
  • Nutritional Aspects of Injuries and Illnesses
  • Health Care Administration
  • Professional Development and Responsibilities.
