What Is Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery?

The FDA approved cervical artificial disc replacement in the United States in 2007. Prior to artificial disc surgery, the spinal fusion approach was the most common procedure performed to alleviate neck and spine pain. Spinal fusion essentially binds together two or more vertebrae to solidify into one bone. And, while patients often experience relief from pain, the fusing of vertebrae ultimately restricts mobility. There is also concern a fusion may not fully “take” or bind the vertebrae together. In addition, there is some evidence that fusion may accelerate degeneration of adjacent unfused discs.

Artificial discs better resemble the natural size and function of the natural discs. This makes artificial cervical disc replacement potentially a better option for patients who seek to eliminate pain but also want to maintain neck movement and flexibility and avoid the potential drawbacks of fusion.

At EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region, our spine surgeons perform two different types of cervical disc replacements:

1. M6

The M6-C disc, the most recently FDA-approved disc technology, is designed to most completely mimic the natural movement of the cervical disc. It allows flexion, extension, side-to-side bending of the neck as well as compression similar to a normal disc. Not only can patients have restored movement that would not have been granted through spinal fusion, the M6-C artificial disc potentially minimizes stress to supporting discs and other spinal structures. M6 is FDA-approved for patients who need one disc replaced.

And, as previously mentioned, the success of artificial cervical disc replacement has allowed many patients to discontinue prescribed pain medication. Clinical data from a U.S. Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) study demonstrates that 92% of patients report satisfaction from their M6-C disc surgery, with 93% saying they would do the surgery again.

2. Mobi-C

Similar to the M6 artificial disc, the Mobi-C has received positive scoring in patient satisfaction and overall success for patients with degenerative disc disease. It also helps to reduce pain and potentially preserve movement of the cervical spine. M6 is one of only two artificial discs on the market that are FDA-approved for use when a patient needs two discs replaced.
