A shoulder dislocation or shoulder instability occurs when the upper end of the arm bone pops out of the shoulder joint. This injury may be caused by a direct blow to the shoulder, a fall on an outstretched hand or arm, or an exaggerated overhead throwing motion. This condition limits the shoulder’s mobility and function.
During a dislocation, the top of the arm bone loses contact with the shoulder socket. This painful injury should be immediately evaluated.
Symptoms of a dislocated shoulder include:
- Pain
- The loss of the contour of the muscle which rounds the shoulder (deltoid)
- The arm becomes positioned away from the body
- The forearm turns outward
If the shoulder should dislocate again, it can cause serious damage to the joint and the surrounding ligament. Repeated dislocations can cause shoulder instability. Arthroscopic stabilization (dislocated shoulder surgery) repairs the shoulder joint and stabilizes it by reattaching torn ligaments to the joint using suture anchors .
Following surgery, the patient will typically need bracing with a sling for 4-6 weeks and physical therapy to regain mobility and function in the shoulder.
We also offer SLAP repair (Biceps tenodesis)
This type of tear affects the biceps tendon that attaches to the top of the shoulder. Symptoms include pain with certain movements, pain within the shoulder or with select arm positions. In addition, patients with a SLAP injury may also experience a locking sensation.
