Comprehensive, Compassionate Help for Those with Scoliosis

EmergeOrtho combines outstanding care with state-of-the-art technology to help both adults and children with spine problems. This dedication to excellence has made us a leader in the state for high-quality orthopedic care.

Scoliosis occurs when the spine curves sideways. In more extreme cases, the spine curves to the point where the lungs have difficulty functioning, and adult scoliosis can stiffen the spine. Because adults have mature skeletons, they require a different treatment approach. Often, scoliosis is accompanied by advanced disc degeneration, severe pain and osteoporosis.

Non-surgical treatment for scoliosis

Most treatment for adult scoliosis is non-operative. One of our experienced spine specialists will create an individualized treatment program consisting of exercise and conditioning to help the patient increase function and energy while trying to reduce the source of pain. Steroid injections may also be used to help control pain. Bracing is rarely used in adults nor does it provide pain relief.

Surgical treatment for scoliosis

Surgery is only recommended for curvatures that have gotten progressively worse or in cases where nonsurgical treatments were unsuccessful and pain still persists. When discs are severely degenerated, spinal fusion may be required.

The length of the recovery is dependent of how extensive the surgery was and the age of the patient. Some patients will be back to full activity in three months, and some patients may need as long as six to nine months to properly heal.

EmergeOrtho’s uncompromising dedication to providing complete care and customized treatment plans for each patient keeps us at the forefront of orthopedic care in North Carolina.
